Fix Microsoft Edge Not Working or Won’t Open Issue

After updating Windows 10, have you ever been into the problem wherein Microsoft Edge not working or crash down automatically without notifying. Microsoft Edge is a new web browser, introduced in Windows 10 and developed by Microsoft. It has replaced Internet Explorer as using an old version of Windows. It includes lots more features as compared to the internet explorer. However, Edge is a quite light version browser and has many features in it, but still many of the users reported some issues i.e. unexpected shut down, won’t open or failed to start, etc. Sometimes, just doing the restart of your computer may fix your problem but not sure.

There could be so many technical reasons behind so, instead looking into the reason, will make the solution by doing certain steps. Hereby, follow the steps given below to fix this problem of Microsoft Edge not working:

Method 1. Uninstall Trusteer Rapport Protection

If you Microsoft Edge won’t launch or crash automatically after few times, most probably, you must be using Trusteer Rapport Protection in your Windows PC and it is conflicting with Edge. This is the sure sort fix that you do by uninstalling Trusteer Rapport Protection. To remove or delete Trusteer Rapport from your PC, follow below steps:

  1. Press “Win + R” to open Run dialog box. Once opened, type “appwiz.cpl” and click OK to open Programs and Features in Windows 10.
  2. You will get a list of all installed programs on your machine. Scroll down and select Trusteer Rapport Protection. Then, select uninstall by doing the right-click and follow on-screen steps.
  3. After uninstallation process completed, just restart your computer.
  4. Now launch Edge browser, Microsoft Edge won’t open issue should be resolved and working fine without any problem.

Still, if you got issues on the edge, then, follow below methods:

Method 2. Disable Startup Services/Clean Booting of PC

Press “Win + R” to open Run dialog box. Once opened, type “msconfig” and click OK button to open System Configuration. Now, go to “Services” Tab, on the left bottom, check the box of “Hide all Microsoft services” and then click on “Disable all” to the right. Once done, click Apply and OK to close the System Configuration window. It may prompt you to restart, select “Exit without restart”.

By Running System File Checker (SFC)

System File Checker is a built-in Microsoft Windows utility that can help to find corrupt files and capable to repair them in such cases. Follow below steps to run System File Checker (SFC):

  1. Press “Win + S” and it will open the Windows search bar. Type “cmd” on it and you will see the result as Command Prompt. Right-click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
  2. A black command prompt window will come up on your screen. Type “sfc /scannow” and hit Enter button from your keyboard. The command will have initiated and start processing the scan. Once completed with 100%, close and restart your PC. Now, launch Edge, should be working edge not launching resolved

Method 3. Reinstalling Microsoft Edge Package

If none of the above method works for you, then, will be doing a re-installation of Microsoft Edge is the only option. Before we start, we need to Enable Hidden Items in your Windows 10.

CAUTION: By doing this process, you may lose your favorites/bookmarks or any settings made to Edge. Suggest you create a system restore point before you start.

  1. First of all, close all the opened pages on Microsoft Edge.
  2. Now navigate to the location given: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Packages
    * Wherein UserName should be your computer user name.
  3. In this folder (Packages), navigate to the folder “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe”, right-click and delete it. If you get any prompt, continue to YES and select “do this for all current items”. Once removed completely, its mandate to restart your computer.
  4. Once PC come back, we need to open “Windows PowerShell as administrator”. For that, press “Win + S” and it will open the Windows search bar. Type “PowerShell” on it and you will see the result as Windows PowerShell. Right-click on it and select “Run as administrator”.

  5. Windows PowerShell will be opened on your screen. Type the command “cd C:\users\yourusername” (replace your username with your user account name, as mine Sandy in below image).
  6. Now copy and paste the below given command to Windows PowerShell and hit Enter key from your keyboard:Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}Microsoft edge not working
  7. Command execution will be started and will finish within few moments. That’s all need to do. We need to restart the computer once again. Once come back, open Microsoft Edge, it will be working fine now for sure and Microsoft Edge not working issue will be resolved.
