In Windows 10, user doesn’t have the control to stop updating software updates in it. Microsoft mandate to download and install automatically to ensure your device stays up to date and functional. Step 2. Navigate and click on “Administrative Tools”.
Step 3. Double click on “Services” to open it.
Step 4. In the “Services” window, scroll down to “Windows Update” and double click to open its properties.
Step 5. In windows update properties; under “General” Tab, go to “Startup Type:” and from the drop down, select “Disabled” and click Stop Tab just below and then, click Apply and OK button.
By doing the above steps, Windows update settings have been saved. Now, you may close all the opened windows from your screen. If you wish to update windows, you will have to go back to the Services and turn it on occasionally to download and update your Windows.
Turn off Windows 10 Update – Windows 10 Professional
If you are using Windows 10 professional, then, we have another option to disable, turn off Windows 10 updates from its Group Policies. Follow the steps given below:
Step 1. Open “Run” dialog box. Press “Win + R” to open Run dialog box. Type, “mmc” and hit Enter or click OK. MMC stands for Microsoft Management Console.
Step 2. The Microsoft Management Console windows will appear. Go to File Menu and select “Add/Remove Snap-in”.
Step 3. You will see a number of services list in this console window. Locate and double click on “Group Policy Object” and it will open a new screen. Do not change anything on this screen. Just click on “Finish” button to continue.
Step 4. Now you can see “Local Computer Policy” is added under console root on the right side of previous screen automatically. Just need to click on OK button to continue.
Step 5. Now locate the following path: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update. Then, go to the right pane and select and double click on “Configure Automatic Updates”.
Step 6. Configure Automatic Updates screen will come up with certain options. Select “Enabled”. Then, under “Options” from the drop-down, select “2 – Notify for download and auto install”. Finally, click Apply and OK to save above settings.
If you will get a prompt to save the console settings, click Yes to continue. After doing above settings, rebooting the computer is mandatory. By rebooting the Windows, above settings will be affecting your Windows. Now on, your Window 10 will not download and install updates by its own. I don’t recommend that you disable, stop or turn off automatic Windows 10 Updates. Updates are good for computer time to time launched by Microsoft for bug fixes, improvements and reliability of the operating system. If you see your computer is fine with downloads in the background and does not affect your work, it is not advisable to disable or turn off windows 10 update.
