However, being on a public network is recommended.
It is safe because if are connected to any other public network like hotels, colleges, hospitals, airports or any of the public place using WiFi of LAN connections that will not make your computer discoverable to others.
On the other hand, private networks are made to make computers discoverable to other computers. Wherein, if you are at home and want to share music, pictures, videos, etc., or even printers as well.
That means if you want to share something with other computers, then you need to change the network type from Public to Private.
Change Network Type from Public to Private if Connected on Wi-Fi
Now depending, how your PC is connected to the network? Is it connected using WiFi or Ethernet (LAN)?
This tutorial will show you how you can change your network location from Public to Private if connected using WiFi.
Note: The given steps will work with Windows 10 and later Windows Versions. For Windows 11, a few steps may vary.
Step 1. Right-click on the Start Menu and select the Settings or press Win + X and select Settings.
Step 2. In this Windows Settings, Now click on Network & Internet.
Step 3. From the left pane, select Wi-Fi and then click on the connected network from the right. For example: Sandy Wi-Fi for me.
Step 4. Now on the next screen, turn the radio button ON of Make this PC discoverable in order to make this network Private.
The above steps are to change your computer network type from Public to Private.
In addition, you may change these settings anytime to Public by making the radio button OFF for “Make this PC discoverable”. If you do not have the intention to share anything on the network, then the best option is to keep the network type as Public.
