By default, Network location is Public in Windows 10. However, this is safe, because if you are outside of your home and connected to any other public network like hotels, colleges, hospitals, airports or any of the public place by using WiFi of LAN connection, that will not make your computer discoverable to others. Apart, Private Networks are made to make computer discoverable to other computers. Wherein, if you are at home and want to share music, pictures, videos, etc., or even printers as well. Therefore, if you want to share something to other computers, then you need to change network type Public to Private.
Change Network Type Public to Private – If Connected on Wi-Fi
Now, depends, how your PC is connected to the network? Is it connected to WiFi or Ethernet (LAN)? This tutorial will show you how you can change network location Public to Private, if connected to WiFi. Note: This works with Windows 10 Version: 1607 Build 14393 or higher.
Step 1. Right-click on the Start Menu and select “Settings” or press Win + X and select “Settings”.
Step 2. In this Windows Settings, Now click on “Network & Internet”.
Step 3. In the left pane, select Wi-Fi, and then click on connected network (Sandy Wi-Fi as mine) from the right.
Step 4. Now, in the next screen, turn the radio button ON of “Make this PC discoverable” in order to make this network Private.
The above steps are to change your computer network type from Public to Private. You may change these settings anytime to Public by making the radio button OFF for “Make this PC discoverable”. If you do not have the intention to share anything on the network, then the best option is to keep the network type as Public.
