Stop Google Chrome Running from Background
This article will show you the steps on how to stop Google Chrome running in the background, if on Windows operating system.
You may be aware of this if you close the Google Chrome browser from its close (x) button, but it still runs in the background as few apps may be using it.

Why to Stop Running Background Apps?
That’s a very genuine question, why should we stop running background apps?
So the answer to this question is that there are many valid reasons to stop or disable apps running in the background and few of them are listed below:
- Background apps use CPU and system memory (RAM)
- You may get unwanted notifications, even though the App is closed
- If any of the apps are running in the background it will use your internet bandwidth
- Also, if you are using a laptop, apps running in the background will consume the laptop battery
- Depending on how the app is running, it may slow down your Windows
Google Chrome is the most used and fastest browser among other web browsers such as Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, etc.
Certainly, you might be using Google Chrome as your default browser to surf the internet on a daily basis and once you are done, you click on the close button (x) and think, it is closed.

Disable Chrome from Running in the Background
In many scenarios, the applications you are open to working on will continue to run in the background.
For example, by default, Google Chrome runs in the background even if you have closed it from the close button.
Hereby, if you want to stop the Chrome browser from running in the background, follow the steps below.
Note: We are using Google Chrome Version 104.0.5112.81 for this article. Your options may vary depending on the Chrome version you have.
Step 1. Open the Google Chrome browser.
Step 2. From the top right corner, click on the three-dots menu and select the Settings option from the list.
Step 3. On the Settings page, click the System option from the left panel.
Step 4. Finally, look at the right-side options and turn off the option “Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed” using toggle button.
That’s all you need to do. Your actions above will take immediate effect on Google Chrome settings and Chrome will no longer run on Windows background apps.
Bear in mind that disabling Chrome to run in the background will not affect anything on your Windows or browser.
Note: you can enable the settings anytime to run Chrome in the background, just turn on the toggle button as on step 5 above.
