This article will show you the steps how to stop Google Chrome running in background, if on Windows operating system.

You may aware of that if you close Google Chrome browser from its close (x) button, but still, it runs in the background as few apps may using it.

Why to Stop Running Background Apps?

That’s a very genuine question that why we should stop running background apps?

So, to the answer of this question is that there are many valid reasons to stop or disable apps running in the background and few of them are listed below:

  • Background apps uses CPU and system memory (RAM)
  • You may get unwanted notifications, even though App is closed
  • If any of the apps are running in the background will use your internet bandwidth
  • Also, if using a laptop, apps running in the background will consume the laptop battery
  • Depending on the app running, may slow down your Windows

Google Chrome is the most used and fastest browser among other web browsers such as Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, etc.

Certainly, you might be using Google Chrome as your default browser to surf internet on daily bases and once you are done, you click on close button (x) and think, it is closed.

Disable Chrome from Running in the Background

In many scenarios, the applications you open to work will continue to run in the background.

For example, by default, Google Chrome runs in the background even you have closed it from the close button.

Hereby, if you wanted to stop Chrome browser to running in the background, follow below steps.

Note: We are using Google Chrome Version 104.0.5112.81 for this article. Your option may vary depending on the Chrome version you have.

Step 1. Open Google Chrome browser.

Step 2. From the right-top corner, click on three-dots menu and select Settings option from the list.

Step 3. In this Settings page, click System option from the left panel.

Step 4. Finally, look at the right-side options and turn off the option “Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed’ by using toggle button.

That’s all you need to do. Your action above will take immediate effect on Google Chrome settings and Chrome will no longer run in the Windows background apps.

Bear in mind, disabling Chrome to running in the background will not affect anything to your Windows or browser.

Note: you can enable the settings anytime to run Chrome in background, just turning on the toggle button as on step 5 above.
