This post will tell you how to find my IP address in a Windows PC. Before we continue, it is important that we know what the exact IP address is?

What is an IP Address?

An IP Address stands for “Internet Protocol Address”.

You can identify the IP address of your device (that can be a computer, router, smartphone, or any internet-enabled device) by which it can be identified.

By using an IP address, you can easily communicate between computers and networks. You can identify the devices using their IP addresses.

For computer systems, IPv4 is used for internet connectivity using your ISP.

IPv4 is a combination of four (4) numbers separated by dots (.). Each IP address falls between zero (0) to 255.

An example of an IP address is 10.234.156.3

Type of IP Addresses

There are two kinds of IP addresses, one is STATIC and another is a DYNAMIC IP address. Both are provided by your ISP (internet service provider).

Check out the description below of both:

Static IP: A static IP address is a dedicated or fixed IP for a device or network. It should be configured manually on your device.

Once a static IP is assigned, it does not change until someone changes it manually.

Static IP is usually used for mail servers, FTP servers, dedicated servers or online applications, etc.

Dynamic IP: As you read above, that Static IP never changed instead, just the opposite of static, dynamic IP changes itself randomly in a short period of time or whenever a network reboots.

Dynamic IPs can change automatically and cannot be traced easily.

Also, there are two IP versions followed by IPv4 and IPv6.

How do I check my System IP Address?

I hope by now you are very much clear about the IP addresses and their uses.

Also, you must have a question in mind: what IP address do I have? Is it static or dynamic?

Don’t worry, you will get an answer by the end of this article.

Methods given below will work with Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, 8.1 and Windows 10.

If you are using a router or a modem between your system and ISP, then it should be treated as your Local IP.

To check your Public IP (an IP configured on the router or modem), check the online method at the end of this article.

Method 1: Check the IP Address Manually

Step 1. Open the Run dialog box with Win + R. Type ncpa.cpl and hit the OK button.

Step 2. A Network Connections window will appear on your screen. You must be connected via an Ethernet cable or with a Wi-Fi connection.

Right-click on the connected network icon and select Status.

Step 3. Network connection windows will come up on your screen.

• Click on Details… button and this action will result in your connected network details.
• Locate the IPv4 address and see just the parallel, there are some numbers like 172.XXX.XX.XX, called an IP address.

Method 2. Locate the IP Address from Command Prompt

Step 1. First, you need to open the Windows command prompt. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.

Type cmd and then, hit the OK button or press enter.

Step 2. A Windows command prompt will appear on your screen. Type ipconfig and hit Enter from your keyboard.

The command will be initiated and within quick seconds, you will see your system network configuration wherein your system IP is also listed.

How to Check Public IP Addresses?

To answer the question above that, do I have a static or dynamic IP?

You should check your IP address on the site for a duration of 4-5 hours, if it gets changed this means you are using a dynamic IP and if not, for sure it is a static IP provided by your internet service provider.
