In this article, you will see a step-by-step guide on how to create or change your WiFi password on your D-Link router. You may be using a different router but the steps are similar to what we are doing to the D-Link router.

A router is a physical network device that helps to forward data packets between networks. The router receives signals from your local ISP (internet service provider) by using a broadband line, Ethernet cable or a satellite connection.

In other words, the router is a communication device between a user and internet service provider to communicate within the network or on the web.

Wireless security is the most important part of a wireless router. After a router configuration, you must know how to setup a WiFi password.

Role of a Router

Routers have a very important role in our daily life to connect to the internet or a local network. If you are reading this post that means, you must be using a wireless modem or router at your place and does not have any wireless password.

Many organizations manufacture routers for business and home users like- Cisco, Linksys, D-Link, ATT, Asus, TP-Link, Netgear, Belkin, etc.

Each brand has their own number of models as per their use. Configuration of every router is almost similar (not quite hard). This post is specially written to let you know how to setup or change WiFi passwords.

Features of a Router

The router has multiple features. Find the given list of router features:

  1. 4 NIC (network interface card) high speed Gigabyte ports for LAN connectivity
  2. ADSL/DSL port
  3. Some wireless routers come with USB ports
  4. Dual-band wireless routers operate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands at the same time
  5. Physically present reset button to re-configure router for any miss-happening

How to Change D-Link Wireless Password?

For instance, I am using a D-Link router (Model: DIR-600M) to show you how easily you can set up or change your WiFi password by yourself. Follow the steps given below to setup or change your WiFi password and secure your network:

Most routers use the default IP address to login into router settings or you can check your router; beneath the router, that shows router’s default settings or there will a configuration sticker on its back.

Step 1. Make sure you are connected to your router through wireless or with an ethernet cable.

First, login to the router configuration page.

Open any of your browsers and type in the following IP 192.168.0.1 (check your router IP) and hit the Enter button and it will open a login page.

By default, login credentials are as

Username: Admin
Password: password

Step 2.
After that, you will see the router’s home page. Navigate to and click on Wireless Menu to explore wireless options.

Step 3. On this page, you can configure or change wireless related settings.

  • Under “Wireless Network”, you can modify the Wireless name (SSID).
  • In “Security Options”, from the drop down, select the security type to WPA2-PSK(AES)

Finally, go to “Security Options (WPA2-PSK)”, you can see the default Pre-Shared Key (WiFi password). Here, change your WiFi password to your desired one.

Click Apply by the end of the page to save configured settings. In conclusion, the wifi password has been changed successfully.

If you are connected wirelessly, you will be disconnected automatically, the moment you click on the apply button on the router page.

Nothing to worry about, click on the wireless icon to the bottom right of your screen and you will see, available network list over there.

Connect to your wireless network and enter the newly created or changed WiFi password and it will connect you back.

Important Note:

When setting-up or changing your wireless password, make sure you have written down the password on a piece of paper exactly the way you typed it.

If you have used any capital letters, symbols, etc., it should be typed exactly at the time of connecting to any wireless enabled device, otherwise it will not connect if you do not provide the right credentials.
