Microsoft Edge Not Working or Edge Won’t Open Issue

After updating Windows 10, have you ever been into a problem wherein Microsoft edge not working or crashing down automatically without notifying?

Microsoft Edge is a new web browser, introduced from Windows 10 and developed by Microsoft. Internet Explorer (as using an old version of Windows) has been replaced with Edge.

Edge includes a lot more features as compared to Internet Explorer. However, Edge is quite a light version browser and has many features in it, but many of the users still reported some issues. For example, unexpected shut down, won’t open or fail to start, etc.

Sometimes, just doing the restart of your computer may fix your problem but I’m not sure. Therefore, do a Windows restart to verify the issue.

How to Resolve Microsoft Edge Issues?

There could be many technical aspects behind Edge not responding or working so instead looking into the reason will work with the solution by doing certain steps.

Hereby, follow the methods below to fix the problem of Microsoft edge not working on Windows 10:

Method 1. Uninstall Trusteer Rapport Protection

If your Microsoft edge won’t launch or crash automatically after a few minutes, you most probably must be using Trusteer Rapport Protection on your Windows and it is conflicting with Edge.

This is a sure fix that doing uninstall of Trusteer Rapport Protection will resolve your edge issues.

To remove or delete Trusteer Rapport from your PC, follow the steps below:

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.
    Once opened, type appwiz.cpl and click OK to open the Programs and Features section of Windows 10
  2. You will get a list of all installed programs on your machine. Scroll down and select Trusteer Rapport Protection.
    Then, select uninstall by doing the right-click and follow the on-screen steps.
  3. After the removal process is completed, just restart your computer.
  4. Now launch Edge browser, issue should be resolved Microsoft edge won’t open and working fine without any problem.

Still, if you have issues on edge, then follow the methods below:

Method 2. Disable Startup Services or Clean Booting of PC

  • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.
  • Once opened, type msconfig and click the OK button to open the system configuration.
  • Now, go to the Services Tab and to the bottom left, check the box to Hide all Microsoft services and then click on Disable all to the right.
  • Once done, click Apply and OK to save and close the system configuration window.
  • It may prompt you to restart, click Exit without restart

Run a System File Checker (SFC) Scan

System File Checker is a built-in Microsoft Windows utility that can help to find corrupt files and capable enough to repair them in such cases.

Follow the steps below to run the system file checker (SFC):

  • Press Win + S and it will open the Windows search bar
  • Type cmd on it and you will see the result as Command Prompt
  • Right-click on it and select Run as administrator

  • A black command prompt window will appear on your screen.
  • Type sfc /scannow and hit the Enter button from your keyboard.
  • The command will be initiated and start processing the scan.
  • Once it is completed to 100%, close and restart your PC.

Method 3. Reinstall Microsoft Edge Package

If none of the above methods work for you then, will be doing a re-installation of Microsoft Edge is the only option left. Before we start, we need to Enable Hidden Items in your Windows 10.

CAUTION: By doing this process, you may lose your favorites/bookmarks or any settings made to Edge. So make sure before you proceed.

Also, suggesting that you create a system restore point before you start.

  1. First, close all the tabs on Microsoft Edge, if any
  2. Now navigate to the location given: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Packages
    Note:
    Wherein UserName should be your computer user name
  3. In this folder (Packages), navigate to the folder Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe, right-click and delete it.
    If you get any prompt, continue to YES and select do this for all current items.
    Once removed completely, it is mandated to restart your computer.
  4. After a restart, we need to open Windows PowerShell as administrator. To do that, press Win + S and it will open the Windows search bar.Type PowerShell on it and you will see the result as Windows PowerShell.Right-click on it and select Run as administrator

  5. Windows PowerShell will be opened on your screen.Type the command cd C:\users\yourusername (replace your username with your user account name, as mine Sandy in below image)

  6. Now copy and paste the below given command into Windows PowerShell and hit the Enter key to execute:
    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

Command execution will start and will finish within a few moments. That’s all need to do.

We need to restart the computer one more time.

Once it is back, launch Microsoft edge, it will be working fine for sure and your issue with the edge has been resolved.
