We Could Not Complete the Install because an Update Service was Shutting Down

This is an incident which happened to us recently. For instance, in one of our Windows 10 Home Single language with Version 2004 and OS build is 190.41.388. We have got an error on Windows update, which states “we could not complete the install because an update service was shutting down”.

If you are one of them who getting this error message while upgrading Windows 10 or updating Windows feature update, this article surely helps you.

After doing an investigation, we come to know that Windows can’t be updated as Windows Services are disabled for some reasons. The reason could be any, such as any software installation, internet interruption while system update is in process, then, Windows update may abort midway and you will get this error message:

How to Fix Issue “We Could Not Complete the Install because an Update Service was Shutting Down”?

Note: The given steps are specifically for Windows 10.

Step 1. Open the Run dialog box with Win + R and type services.msc, then hit Enter or click OK

Step 2. A Windows service screen will come up on your screen.

• Scroll down and locate Windows Update
• Check out the Startup Type is set to Manual (Trigger Start), which is not an expected behavior.
• It supposes to be set to Automatic

Step 3. Right-click on Windows update and select Properties from the given list

Step 4. Windows update properties screen will come up. After that, follow below steps:

1. Click General Tab
2. Select Startup Type: Automatic from the drop-down list
3. Finally, click on Apply along with OK to save settings and close the screen

In conclusion, by doing the above steps, Windows update service will be enabled and Windows can be updated now.

To check this, go back to Windows update option by following Windows Settings App –> Update & Security -> Windows Update -> Click Retry or check for updates

On the other hand, if you still face the same issue and get the error message of “we could not complete the install because an update service was shutting down” then, as an alternative “Run the Windows Troubleshooter”.

This is how you can reach at Windows 10 troubleshooter and run Windows 10 update troubleshooting:

• Press Win + I to launch Windows 10 Settings App
• Click Update & Security
• From the left pane, click Troubleshoot
• Now to the right pane, locate and select Windows Update and click “Run the troubleshooter”
