Safe mode or safe mode with networking Windows is also known as a diagnostic mode of an operating system, developed by Microsoft. This is a very good Windows utility to diagnose Windows issues in certain cases.

Most techies do use safe mode utility to diagnose and fix the computer. But do you know how to boot the operating system to safe mode? If not, this post will explain to you the steps to boot your computer on safe mode utility.

Therefore, we have two ways: you may boot your computer in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking in such conditions when your computer misbehave or doesn’t respond properly.

Follow the steps given below with two different methods to start Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 computer in advanced boot menu:

Method 1:

Start Windows in Safe Mode with Networking from Startup

Step 1. First of all, turn your Windows desktop or laptop completely off (shut down).

Step 2. Now, you need to turn it ON. The moment it is powered on, start tapping the function key F8, it will display the Advanced Boot Options as shown in the image below:

Start Windows on Diagnostic ModeStep 3. As a result, you will see above screen and your computer mouse won’t be functional at this screen.

You need to use the up and down arrow keys from your keyboard and select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking and then press Enter.

Step 4. Now Windows will start booting and it will boot your computer in safe mode or diagnostic mode, depending on what option you have selected in Step 3.

Method 2:

Using System Configuration Utility

Step 1. If your computer is turned ON. Open the run dialog box with the key combination Win + R .

Now type in the command box, msconfig and click the OK button or hit Enter from your keyboard.

msconfigStep 2. Hence, a new System Configuration window will appear on your computer screen, as shown in the image below.

Click on the Boot tab located at the top of the System Configuration window.

In Windows XP, this tab is labeled as BOOT.INI. Check the checkbox from the left of the Safe boot under the Boot Option, as shown in the image above.

  • In Windows XP, /SAFEBOOT.

There are a few other modes of Safe Mode as well along with the radio buttons under the Safe boot option,. We only require the below two only:

  • Minimal: Starts standard Safe Mode
  • Network: Starts Safe Mode with Networking

safe mode with networkingStep 4. Select Minimal (without internet) or Network (with internet) and click on Apply and OK. You will be prompted to Restart, click on Restart.

Your computer will now start Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking as per the selected option.
